All or Nothin'

My son has always done everything ALL THE WAY. When he was born, he wasn't just a little sick...he was VERY sick. His birth had nearly every complication possible. When he started talking, it wasn't a word here or there...it was full out sentences. At school, he gets all A's and settles for nothing less.

So we're used to the all-or-nothing game with him. This weekend, and for the last several weeks really, he's been in the "nothing" category - as in, there was nothing going wrong with his health. Then last night, he said he had a bad headache. I've been his mother long enough to know that it wasn't just a headache.

This morning at a little after 4, he came barreling into our room in tears, saying he felt sick. He stood over the toilet and bawled, holding his head. A few hours later at the doctor's office, the doctor looked at him and started preparing a room to admit him to.

Luckily, we were able to come home instead and see what the next 24 hours bring. The poor child feels terrible and is suffering from "some kind of virus/infection combination" (doctor's words) that make him ache from head to toe. His fever is high, his energy is zapped, his appetite gone, his gag reflex engaged. He doesn't even want to play Xbox - only sleep interests him.

Those who know our son know that the next few days will either mean a total recovery that leave us shaking our heads, or admitting him to the hospital for a several-day stay getting IV antibiotics. Either way, I want him to just feel better. My heart aches for him when he is sick. He's endured so much crap (there's no better word) in his nearly 7 years and deserves every ounce of goodness that can come his way.

This is the part of parenthood no book or class can cover. It just hurts.
