It's a Stupid Saying

You know the one, "A sight for sore eyes." There's also "Do you have blinders on?"

They aren't quite as funny when they hit home. A couple of weeks ago, my husband went for a routine eye exam. The hot air balloon test (you know the one) would focus. It zoomed in and out and in and out. So they put him in another chair for a different test. The doctor came in and asked why he hadn't mentioned "this" on his history. "Mentioned what?"

He then showed him imaging he'd taken. His eye looked like this:

The yellow spots aren't supposed to be there.

They are "lipid deposits" on the blood vessels of his eye. Unlike a build up in your heart's arteries (very scary), these can't be treated. They lead to age-related macular degeneration - usually in people over 65. Not 35.

We aren't sure yet of the "stage" or how long he's had it, so we can't establish an "onset" or "progression" at this time, aka "baseline." We are meeting with specialists in mid-June.

His first reaction was fear, of course. That he's going blind, that he won't see his children grow up, graduate, have children, etc. But we're going to hold off panic until we know where we are. Until then, we pray. Even if his loss of sight is eminent, we'll get through it together. Like we always do.

If you're the praying type, a few extras for us are appreciated.
