Her accident happened two weeks ago yesterday. For the many days following, her doctor swore up and down that she'd never leave skilled nursing. He gave it a "Less than 5% chance."
In our family we LOVE to prove doctors wrong. WE LOVE IT!
"She only has hours, if that," doctors would say about my mom. "She'll never come off life support, you have decisions to make." (7 years ago)
"Five years. Tops." That was what doctors said about my dad's life expectancy after his cancer diagnosis (five years ago).
Here are my mom, dad and grandma, just a few weeks ago:
IN YOUR FACE!! :)So, here's the plan. Grandma, in all her awesomeness, made the decision in her mind that she wanted to go to assisted living. Not home. But not "nursing home." My folks, along with the doctor, are signing the papers today to have her moved into a facility just steps away from my sister. She'll have a one bedroom "apartment" and three meals prepared for her every day. Activities, a library, a community garden. She made it happen.
Her house will be sold. So, too, will my folks'. They are looking for a smaller home, less maintenance, less yard, more "Them." This turns me into realtor mode, and I get such a kick out of looking at houses. My husband will be building a new fence between grandma's house and my folks' before selling them (like, soon). He loves to be needed.
So, a sour situation has turned into a blessing, both for my folks and my sweet grandma.
God sure works in mysterious ways. LOVE IT!
