Between the hours of midnight and 8 am, these are some things that we hear at our house:
1. The phone ringing...it's either the substitute caller booking me, someone bearing medical emergency news about a family member, or my husband's carpooling buddies calling in sick.
2. The dog...whining, her toenails on the hardwoods or her trying to get out from under a bed.
3. Sirens going off...usually police and ambulance (but sometimes tornado). The first two are simply because we live close to the hospital.
4. Footsteps...our daughter running (sprinting, actually) to our bedroom.
5. Alarm clocks going off (4:00 am and 5:30 am)
6. White noise...ice machine refilling, air purifiers, the A/C, the buzz of the cable box
7. Crickets.
8. The "If you go out in the woods today" song over and over in our heads.
9. Cats meowing...we have several neighborhood cats. The meowing is usually followed by screaching that is a bunny, squirrel or some other creature being eaten.
10. Sheep CRYING out to me that they miss being counted.
