Change of Plans....STAT!

I had a very busy weekend planned. On Friday evening, I was going to kickboxing class, followed by a get-together with a bunch of high school girlfriends. Today, I was going to mow and edge three yards (Ours, parents and grandma's), followed by working at a special event at work and tomorrow, church, kickboxing, and a handbell concert.

Instead, I'm in room 247. This is a new room for us. It's the red and purple room. We've been in the green and yellow room (go Packers!) and the blue and orange room (go Bears!), but never the red and purple room (still coming up with what team it could be).

Oh how quickly plans change. Thursday evening, our son announced his tummy was hurting. That's not a new announcement. We braced ourselves, but all seemed ok. In the am, he was fine, ate a good breakfast and was raring to go to school. At noon, we got a call that he had a 101 fever and stomach pains. Back at home, he wanted to go to bed, and didn't get back up until he started vomiting around 6:30. His fever stayed around 102 all afternoon, even with meds. After the vomiting started, he had a new announcement. "My side hurts...here (pointing to lower right side).

That's right folks. Appendicitis.

My dad raced to the house to keep little sis and we raced to the ER. Upon entering...37 sick people waiting. Really? When you put on the check in form that your son has no immune system...then text the ER doc that you're in the waiting room and need to be seen, things move quickly. We were moved to a private "holding" area and the doc, who is a friend of my husband's brother (who's an EMT) saw his name pop up, texted us to see what was happening and got us through the red tape asap. "Does it hurt here?" Yes. High fever. White count of 18,000 - no CT necessary. "We'll call the surgeon." At 11 pm, he went into the OR.

It's 12 hours later, and he's doing OK. Appendix was inflamed and scarred - which means he's had appendicitis before. Sigh. Had it ruptured, his lack of healing powers would have created a NIGHTMARE. Thank you GOD. He still has fever, and lots of pain. The respirator created a nasty sore throat and cough, and coughing hurts, but he's hanging in there.

So yes, a change of plans. But do I care? Nope. That's what being a mommy is about. And my friends, family and church family - and the great nurses and docs here are making everything just fine. We're settling in for a long few days, but as long has Cale's ok, we're all ok.
