Here is a post from July for a little backdrop to today's scene: http://myheartofhope.blogspot.com/2008/07/roid-rage.html
Things aren't all that different. Prednisone is THE medicine in our house - THE medicine that heals the inflammation in his lungs and helps him breathe. It gets rid of the seal bark cough and congestion so he can take a deep breath - something that is not easy for him during these times.
It is also THE medicine that makes him rage against the world. He yells and screams, stomps and shouts, kicks and flails, runs and throws things, cries and weeps...and weeps some more. And then I weep. And then I fall into bed and try to sleep, all the while listening to the baby monitor that hasn't shut off since the minute he came home six years ago.
It's difficult as a parent to allow your child to act this way. Every fiber of your being wants to spank him and send him to his room. Or take away his privileges, or deny him rewards such as dessert. But it's not who he is. He isn't choosing to act out - it's just a side effect. So you just absorb it until every muscle aches.
Thankfully at school, the rage stays in check - his teacher tells us he doesn't act like this there. Yet she notices more sensitivity, emotion, nervousness and fatigue. Yeah, the good side is saved for his teacher. Thanks, pal.
At Christmastime, it's not hard to realize the gift that has been given to us in this child. Yet it doesn't stop us from wanting to throw each and every one of his Christmas presents out the window on days like this. I'm so thankful that he'll be tapered off these meds in time for Christmas. Otherwise, he might give new meaning to "Scrooge" and "Grinch," yet he'll always be our precious angel.
