Today is our son’s last day of Kindergarten! It is almost impossible to believe that the year is over. I remember so clearly the first day of school and how I cried when we left him. Today there weren’t any tears – just sheer pride and joy.
I saw his teacher last night when I was picking the kids up from daycare. Her children attend the same daycare, so we had the fortunate opportunity to also get to know her and her family at a personal level. She told me that she couldn’t imagine how our son’s Preschool teacher had to struggle to decide if she should recommend him for Kindergarten or keep him in Preschool another year (he’s a summer baby, therefore it could have gone either way).
Allow me to brag for a few moments. This young man missed 26 days of school this year (that basically equates to more than a month in school-days) due to illness. He came into Kindergarten not able to read a single word. He knew most of his alphabet, could write most of his letters, and count to 50. But he was struggling, and we were worried.
Today, my little man can count as high as you’ll let him, write just about anything that you tell him to, is reading “E” level books where he only needed to be at “B” level to enter first grade, and is the top scorer in his class in First Grade readiness. According to his teacher, “He’s a sponge – he soaks up every piece of information you give him.”
He’s adding, subtracting and multiplying. He can write entire paragraphs, count money and read books endlessly (real books, not “see Spot run” books).
We’re so proud of him. He endured a lot of turmoil and challenges this year. But in spite of all of that, he’s excelled beyond any of our imaginations and is entering First Grade as the youngest and brightest star.

He asked me this morning when his sister would be starting Kindergarten. I told him when he was in 4th Grade. Then I did the math - that means she'll enter 1st as he enters Middle School. She'll graduate Middle School when he graduates High School. And she'll graduate High School when he graduates College. Whew. We're in for the ride of our lives! :)
